Five minutes ago a VERY fine student was in my office asking me for recommendations about grad schools to attend. She would like to stay in the southeast. I had to tell her, honestly, that although I might have recommended USM before I knew of the current mess, today I could not in good conscience encourage anyone to think about going there. This is a shame, because she is a superb scholar, will someday be a superb teacher, and would have made a great grad student at USM if she came there. However, she will be applying elsewhere, and I suspect that the same will be happening in many, many other cases unless the university makes a u-turn soon.
I am an honor student who will graduate this year. I would love, absolutely love to stay at USM for my Master's. I have fallen in love with this university in recent years. But due to recent events, I can not not stay. The quality of my education comes first and foremost.
Wonderful professors from my department have already left. I also considered a Master's in education, because I will also receive licensure when I graduate. Again, there is no way in hell I will work in a department Dana Thames is associated with. She has run off all of the quality faculty in that dept. & I'm not sure they can even keep their NCATE accreditation.
I am saddened by the fact that I will not be able to stay at the university I love so much. We all need to work together to get Thames out of the Dome asap! Once he's gone, Southern Miss will finally be able to get TO THE TOP!
Same thing happened to me earlier tonight. A community college elementary ed transfer student asked me about USM. I told her to stay away from USM if she is considering elementary ed--that USM's ed department probably won't even have NCATE accreditation next fall unless some drastic changes are made.
She is now looking at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.
She would have transferred in as a junior.
And she isn't the only person I've offered similar advice to over the past couple of weeks. There have been many.

Yes...and some grads' whole committees are looking elsewhere. How CAN you stay under those circumstances?
I, too, considered attending grad school here, but I don't want to put in all that hard work just to be laughed at when I apply for a job. It's really sad because I believe we have a great history department despite the recent retirements and departures.
