Folks, this time our two professors need your financial help and they need it immediately.
Here is what I just posted on the webpage. I know we have many out-of-state people who read this message board. This is a way you can help our two professors win this battle:
****************************
The Legal Defense Fund for Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer is just about out of money.
The administration has big Jackson lawyers paid for by the state. The funds for Shelby's legal wranglings are limitless. That's not the case for Frank and Gary.
Frank and Gary are having to pay their own legal expenses.
This battle is bigger than just saving the jobs of two professors; the outcome of this case will set a precedent not only at USM but nationally. The actions against Frank and Gary are unprecedented. What is determined in Frank and Gary's hearing will have a bearing on tenure procedures, guidelines, and tenets at all public universities.
Therefore, this issue is not just about their jobs, but the future of all people involved in the public university system, not just in Mississippi, but in every state.
Please give any amount you can spare to the Legal Defense Fund for Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer. No amount is too small.
You can mail your donations to:
Dr. Amy Young Department of Anthropology and Sociology Box 5074 University of Southern Miss. Hattiesburg, MS 39406
If you are on campus and would like to donate, drop the check or money order off at Amy Young's office on the fourth floor of the Liberal Arts Building.
Make the check to USM AAUP and write "legal defense fund" on the memo line. Your donations will be used ONLY to assist the two professors with their attorney fees. Whatever funds remain after this crisis is resolved will be refunded proportionally to donors.
"But for the grace of God go I." Remember, if Shelby wins this one, any of us could be next. Let's support the two men who are taking the heat for all of us.
**********************************************
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DECIDES HELP!

As a regular contributor to the defense fund, it would be good reinforcement for all of us if AAUP gave us a running total of how much has been contributed to date. It was also demonstrate to the public the commitment of those who support G/F. I feel like a shareholder in this cause - an "annual report" would be appreciated. Keep up the good work!

The reason AAUP does not give the figure is people may see a big number and think all is well. The amount spent to date is into six figures, and the fund was almost tapped out Friday. Two attorneys are working very hard to keep up with two Jackson attorneys with unlimited resources to say nothing about all the "attorneys" in the dome. There is also the privacy issue in revealing what the attorneys have made so far. A report on the number of contributors, the range of contributions, and the states represented is in the works. Rest assured that the all of this is being monitored daily by the executive committee of AAUP. When all is done, a report will be made.
I think the contributors deserve to know how much money has been donated; we are a part of this process and shouldn't be kept in the dark. Lets not adopt the secretive ways of SFT.

How about a compromise? Maybe contributors who wish to have this information should get it directly from the AAUP defense fund organizer. It seems a reasonable request -- on the other hand putting it out in public might not be such a good idea as it will also give the other side a sense of time and resources the defense is putting into the work. We all know this is a public listserv and not everyone who tunes in sympathetic to the cause.

I'm sure Dr. Amy Young would be willing to speak privately with contributors who wish to know how things are going.

We need to be clear about a couple of things:
The money the university spends is public money; the public should hold all public officials accountable for expenditures. People who are donating to the LDF are doing so because they WANT to.
Your assertion is really silly, since, by insinuation, you are saying that the AAUP is taking collections but is not being held accountable. That's just not so.
Does not the page on this site which asks for donations state that every penny that is donated to the legal defense fund will be spent to cover legal fees for the two professors? I can promise you that no one in AAUP is taking vacations or paying car notes with your donations. I can also assure you that the AAUP treasurer will be happy to discuss the specifics about the donations to you, but for you to say that that information should be presented on this message board is just silly.
If you would like an appointment with Amy Young to discuss the AAUP legal defense fund for Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer, please email me today and I will act as a liaison to get you an appointment with Amy Young.
Let me add one thing: I can promise you that the VOLUNTARY donations that people are sending to the LDF are being spend for the purpose for which they were solicited.

Remember, Shelby isn't having to pay a penny for his representation--his legal team is state-funded. Keep those donations pouring in. Thanks to everyone who has helped and who plans to help. I know both professors appreciate you!"
Actually, that's what they have spent so far. The amount received is only a tad above that.

Thanks for the correction, Flash.
Everyone hear that?...more donations needed. Even if you can only give a few dollars, that will buy time with the attorneys.
Again, thanks to everyone who has donated. Let's keep money in the fund...this fight is for the academic whole and its future, not just for two professors.
One of the professors told me a very touching story. A few weeks ago a woman of humble origins walked into the attorney's office in downtown Hattiesburg and gave the secretary $5 for the defense fund. It's things like that which let us know their cause is just.
