Bill Sisson: Former Director of the Center for Community and Economic Development now the economic developer for somewhere in Alabama.  He left in the fall of 03-04.

Question:  Would those that left this summer be included in the 03-04 count or in last years fleeing faculty count?  If the summer counts then please include the fellow below.

Ron Swager: Professor in economic development, left to go somewhere in Arkansas during the summer of 03, rumor has it he will be starting an economic development program at a university there.

Have you noticed that very few faculty from the College of Sci & Tech are on the list of faculty leaving? I know that this college is also hiring very agressively.

Add Mary Ann Stringer, former Dean of Fine Arts and a valued faculty member in music. If Gary gets run over, she will not work for these people.

Kathy Davis, Information Services Librarian - Gulf Park (and current Faculty Senator).  I'm not 100% certain, but I think she's retiring.

Add Rick Reeves, head women's basketball coach, to the list. He has accepted the head coaching position at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. Reeves had one year remaining on his contract and was not given a contract extension at the end of the 2003-2004 season.

I just read it on the EagleTalk board. The official announcement is on the Gardner-Webb athletic website. No mention of it on the Southern Miss athletic website, yet.

The Black and Gold Game is tomorrow.  Has anyone heard if Bower's contract has been extended?  I haven't heard that it has.

this list is from '03-'04 only (not sure FS's server can handle the entire list from Shelby's beginning).

then that's more frightening!

From the library - although they were Spring '03, you could add:
Meg Meiman (American University, DC)
Mary Hamilton (Auburn)
Toby Graham (the professor whose Excellence Award was revoked because he was leaving -- UGA)
Suzanne Graham (UGA)
Bobs Tusa (Retired)

Why is that huge news?  A very poor coach is leaving before the last year of his contract.  Another losing season next year would have doomed him at Southern Miss.

How do you explain the fact that Bower's contract has yet to be renewed?

I think there are some legitimate questions concerning Bower's coaching performance over the last few years.  Last year was excellent from a conference stand point but pitiful in non-conference games.  I expect him to get an extension but I don't think it hurts to let him know that a higher performance level is demanded.

Like whether he has done all that he can here at USM and we need someone else to push us to the next level.  I'm not saying that I agree with that but there are plenty of people that do.

What next level?  Do we have the resources for "the next level?"

Whether he's good for USM or not, the fact that his contract hasn't been renewed yet IS huge news.

The next level would be a consistent top 25 team with occasional shots at a BCS bowl.

Does USM have the resources to do that?

To be top 25?  Then why aren't we?

Well, because we had a run of poor recruiting years that caught up with us.  Hopefully that will change starting with the last couple of classes.

Right now, Bower's defense is down to 60% because of injuries, health problems.  He can't help that.

Are you saying, then, that if it weren't for Bower, USM's football team would be top 25.  I heard that the Dome Gnome threw a fit when we lost the Liberty Bowl.  Is Bower being punished for that?
