Does anyone have any suggestions on how students such as myself can focus on the schoolwork they have to do instead of on the injustice happening all across campus?  I'm worried my degree won't mean anything if I ever finish it.  I'm worried I won't be able to concentrate on anything while the circus of the hearing is going on.  I know it's probably good for the hearing to happen while students and faculty are here to observe and protest and all, but this whole mess, starting with the Dvorak debacle, has severely impeded my ability to concentrate on education.  Plus I've become paranoid that big brother is watching all of the time, impeding my free speech.  I'm worried that the college board will support Thames even after the hearing and the list goes on...  I suspect Thames' reign of terror has affected more than just the students of Stringer and Glamser, and it's just plain wrong that I have to worry about the quality of any new professors because of the lack of good applicants.

Far greater distractions were the case for students during the civil rights days and the Viet Nam era. What you miss in the classroom or text book is more than compensated for by the lessons learned about political participation and human rights. Get involved and savor the moment. If you do, your education will have been enriched, and your eyes will have been opened.

You WORRY???? this is on the verge of exiting.  You need to start worrying if the hearing doesn't go our way.  Until them, understand that we are all actively doing all that we can to find justice for our teachers

I got a C in Glamsers sociology class, and even I can understand that what happened to them in VERY wrong.  Trust that truth will prevail until shown otherwise..

I must admit that I am somewhat upset at instructors leaving instead of staying to fight this battle with us.

Some advice I always give my students when they feel overwhelmed is to try to break each assignment down into its smallest parts and then do each part; the more parts you do, the better and more confident you feel, and the more momentum you acquire.  In no time, the assignment is done.  For instance, if you have a long paper do, try not to think of it as a long paper but as a series of distinct paragraphs.  Set a goal to do one or two paragraphs a day instead of waiting until the last minute to try to do the whole paper in one fell swoop.

I can fully understand why you feel distracted and worried.  It cannot be easy for anyone at USM to do his or her work right now -- another reason why SFT's actions were a perfect example of bad management.  He has disrupted the university severely, and apparently this has been going on (to a lesser degree) for the last two years.  His attempts to increase productivity have ironically impeded it.  He has created a situation in which valuable time, money, and intelligence is being wasted on a situation he could easily have avoided if he had acted more wisely.

One good thing is that when he does leave people will probably be so relieved that everyone will come together and really try to rally around the new president and work with that person if s/he is even half-way decent.  This, bu the way, is another reason the IHL should ask SFT to step down ASAP: the sooner he is gone, the sooner the healing and rebuilding can begin.  I have personally witnessed how quickly the whole mood of a place can change for the better once an ineffective manager has departed.

In the meantime, though, try to find teachers and other students who can help you keep focused on your studies while not neglecting to participate in making USM a better place.

By the way, I suspect there are lots of sites on the internet offering "study tips"; surely some of these will give advice on how to study during stressful situations.  I will look around, and if I find any, I will post the URLs  here.  Good luck!

I really DO know the difference between "due" and "do"; sorry for not proofreading before hitting "send."

Curious, I feel you.  It always gets tough at the end of the semester.  I'll be on the computer working on a paper or other project, and seem to find myself back here reading the message board and looking for updates.

Anyway, sympathizer has some good advice.  Try to break your assignments down so your not so overwhelmed.

I have learned more in this past month than what I have learned in more than a few of my classes.  Becoming active in this type of thing helps to build your character.  Although you do learn life lessons from participating in events outside of the classroom, I would suggest that you not slack off in your classes.  As some have said before, most of the students involved in this are honor students.

My advice go to the meet-ups, protests, and hearings, only if it will not effect your work too much.  I think of it like this: If my grades start to slip, then Shelby's actions have gotten to me to the point where I can't concentrate on my schoolwork.  I will not let Shelby's mismanagement affect me that much.

It will work out.  School will be out soon so I encourage you to spend some of your free time this summer to stay active in this campaign against Thames' mismanagement.  We will need all the help we can get this summer.

Well said, Messy. I agree.

Thanks everybody, for the great advice.  The panic is starting to die down and I'm getting a little more sleep.  Study will rule my life for a while now.  Then I'll take a break to view as much of the hearing in the union as I can and of course I'll be wearing my glamser/stringer support badge.  While I won't have time to help plan any of the concerned students stuff, I'll keep in the loop through this website.  I really just needed some support to keep up the fight for the integrity of this campus (and believe me, I'm taking hits).  This board is a great help for that, even though it can at times be overwhelming.

Any student who shows up is a concerned student.  Wear your pin and take a friend or two with you.

Just curious: what kinds of hits are you taking?  I'm assuming you're getting criticized by fellow students; what kinds of arguments do they make?  Maybe we can help you come up with some good replies!
