Looking for an answer from someone who knows...

Who was Provost at USM from 1998-2002?

Who was Vice President for Academic Affairs at USM from 1998-2002?

How were these two roles differentiated?

Currently, Tim Hudson is the Provost and VP for Academic Affairs, attaining that title when the IHL Board appointed Shelby Thames  President in 2002.

I cannot supply dates, but I can work backward and give you the information in terms of sequence.

David Huffman was VPAA when Fleming replaced Lucas. He resigned that position and returned to teaching. He was replaced by Karen Yarborough, who held both that post and the one currently held by Dvorak. Her appointment to the position was announced in a convocation, and Fleming said she would be in the office for I think 18 months. It wasn't too long after that when she found out in a cabinet meeting that Fleming had advertised for a person to fill the position of provost, which was a new position. Myron Henry was the person who was chosen as the first USM provost. He was subsequently replaced by Anselm Griffen, who was replaced by Jay Grimes, who apparently was totally overwhelmed by Cynthia Moore, who went to all of his meetings. Grimes was then replaced by Hudson.

Myron Henry was provost in 1999-2001 bulletins along with Clyde Ginn as VP for Academic Affairs 1999-2000, no listing for VP in 2000-2001 bulletin; Anselm Griffin is listed as Provost in 2002-2003 bulletin with no listing for VP for Academics in that bulletin either.

As Associate Vice President for Administrative Affairs, concurrent with being Dean of the College of International and Continuing Education and Professor of Economic Development for the period 1998-2002, who would Tim Hudson have reported to during that time?

Don't forget SFT's idea "cross-training" Provosts...Hudson was first Provost for the Gulf Coast (a title that did not exist under Fleming, I believe).  Jim Williams was VP for the Gulf Coast for the longest time.  I believe the sequence on the Coast was:  Jim Williams, VP for Gulf Coast; Tim Hudson, Provost for Gulf Coast; then Jay Grimes, Provost for Gulf Coast (when .  I don't know exact dates, though.  Can anyone from the Coast provide these?

The idea of a Provost at USM was brought in by Fleming...until then, the chief academic officer was called VP for Academic Affairs.

No wonder it's confusing...

At a lot of other universities, Provost and VP for Academic Affairs are one and the same job.

At Clemson, the full job title is: Provost and VP for Academic Affairs.  That's been the title since at least the mid-80s.
