Joe Paul was not the faculty/student favorite for the VP position at TAMU. He "withdrew" on the same day that the search committee named the vice chancellor from Chapel Hill the new VP of Student Affairs at A&M.
The other article is dated the 24th, the same day that Paul "withdrew." This article states that the choice was announced yesterday. At any rate, it looks like all of the candidates were contacted prior to the announcement--I guess "withdrew" is a nice way of saying "I was not chosen."
Actually, a pretty classy way to handle it. Texas A&M is a first-rate school. Informing the other candidates before the announcement was made public, thus giving them a chance to gracefully back out and make peace at their home organizations was a "best practice" worth remembering.
I would be surprised it Joe Paul wanted the big publicity here about pulling his name. That press release reeked of the Mader machine spin.

I agree with both your points, especially the last one: did you catch the "loyalty" comment made by Thames?

Yes, I made this comment on the other Joe Paul thread. It is common practice to allow candidates to "withdraw" in order to save face at their home institution. Unfortunately, it gave Thames yet another opportunity to trot out his "family loyalty" (dysfunctional as it is) metaphor.

It's oh so transparent, though.

It's true. Joe Paul is loyal ... to the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI.
In the cult of personality that higher ed administration in general has become over the past 30 years, it is completely understandable that the SFT spin machine would convert that into loyalty to the president.
OTOH, having been around Dr. Paul off-and-on since we were both undergrads, he does have a track record of sucking up to superiors, ingratiating himself, etc. In the higher ed administration business, that is a key to survival. And Joe Paul is a survivor. So he probably welcomed the spin.
His saving grace is that he is very, very good at student services administration -- he's actually very qualified for his job! (Why does that sound exceptional?) That is probably why he's so popular on this board...

Yes, yes, yes...It seems that every comment coming out of Shelby's mouth and through Darth's lips is geared toward saving Shelby's a$$ as tomorrow approaches. The loyalty comment struck me that way. It would be nice to read a comment that is what it is, instead of a veiled attempt to sway public opinion to their side. That's asking an awful lot, though.
