I listened via the Internet to today's hearing involving, in part, my former student, Angeline Dvorak. It was disturbing to say the least. I must say that I don't believe Angeline had anything to do with planning the actual case. We teach a seminar here every Summer entitled "Don't Ask for an Open Hearing if Your Case is ****," and I checked the rolls just this afternoon and found that Angie had indeed audited that seminar when she was here in the early 1990s. Well, that's a debate for another day, and probably for the classroom.
I really hate to see what Angeline has wrought upon your university, but I must say I'm not surprised. My main regret now is that we did little to stop it back in the early 1990s when we had the chance. Just today I was reading some old e-mails Angie wrote as a student here (using a Thomas Cooley account and password) back in the early 1990s. In one she described an attempt to discredit that professor who gave her a D+ by gathering information on him from a Carfax report obtained only after gaining access to the VIN on his vehicle by looking through the windshield of his car while it was parked on campus. VIN numbers are confidential, and her illegal use of it to obtain the Carfax report constituted an attempt by her to hamper the effectiveness of that professor to render proper grades. We called her in to investigate the matter and she admitted to investigating the professor during the first two weeks of October of 1994. What we found out only later stunned us all, my risk manager included. She had actually placed a phone call from a campus payphone to the Carfax company on September 28, 3 days before the day she told us the investigation officially began. We were flabbergasted. Again, though, as I've told you all, Angeline and I made up at her graduation. I can only say to you all now that we are truly sorry we didn't take stronger action against her. Maybe, through a closed hearing up here in East Lansing 10 years ago, this whole mess down there could've been avoided.
Thank you so much for clarifying that for all of us. I'm sure everyone on this list (and let me assure you, we are all red blooded American males) was waiting so that we could get all of the facts out in the open and respond rationally, rather than just with emotion. Since things have now returned to normal, we are sure that the Thomas Cooley Law School can continue to move forward.
We'd also like to invite you to visit us at Southern Miss and check up on Angie personally. The climate here is so much quieter than East Lansing, especially since Angie's yellow-shirted iTech staff are keeping things under control. (Of course, I do not mean to denigrate Angie in any way.) And if we ever get a clear idea of what the USM drug and alcohol policy is, I will personally be delighted to initiate buying you a drink.
