The email signature below was authored by a USM professor; I think everyone should use this--feel free to copy/paste it into your email program.
*CAUTION: As was revealed in hearings held at the USM campus on April 28, 2004, all email is subject to monitoring by the Office of the University President. Since he has used this authority to attempt to fire two tenured professors, please be aware that anything you say in an email sent to a USM email address is subject to be read by third parties and possibly disclosed to the public.
if they have the type of spyware that is availible today, then they can read your private emails too (i.e. sent through hotmail) as long as it is sent on USM computers. They can moniter every keystroke. This is if that spyware is installed to moniter every move made on a USM computer.
Messages sent on cell phones are safer, or just wait until you get home and email each others private address.

You are right. They can even skim passwords you may type in to pay an online account or to enter into your hotmail email.
Spyware is NASTY business. I don't do anything on a university computer that I wouldn't want posted on the USM sign on the corner of 49 and Hardy.
You are also correct about using cell phones. NO one I know discusses anything private over university phones anymore. When I need to speak to folks on campus, I dial their cells.
I am hoping that the new president will end all of these intrusive practices.
Or, how about at the start of the next semester, all of the students/faculty refuse to use any USM computer for email. On the other hand, something that might be much more possible, would be for all of us to fill our USM emails with exactly what we thought about things. Fine, let him fire us ALL.

And if no one signs up for email, Shelby might have a problem justifying that $249,999.99 contract with Pileum.
I sure hope you all are safe with your cell phones. I know of one local attorney who will not discuss private information via cell phones for fear of interception. A quick "Google" search (cell phone privacy) makes me think his concern may be well founded.
What about the people on the "other end" of the quoted emails? Do they have some rights in this, rights to their own privacy? Did any of them know their private correspondance was going to be read in a public hearing? They certainly didn't agree to USM's policies!
I'm curious about a different e-mail issue. The USM Alumni Assn is kind enough to offer an e-mail service to AA members. Is this e-mail also subject to USM administrative peaking?

Excellent question. Hey, guys, keep posting these questions and I will have someone inquire with iTech through written correspondence and request that they respond with the answers to the questions posed here.

I would imagine so. The Alumni Association are part of the loyal USM family, aren't they?
a tip, and maybe you tech savvy types can help out with this...
if you ever find yourself having to use a USM computer in one of the many labs here, make sure auto form complete and saving passwords is turned off for whatever browser you are using.
for IE users
go to tools> internet options> content tab> autocomplete
clear all passwords and forms and uncheck the 'use auto complete for' boxes...
i imagine some of these virus senders are digging through comps in labs to get information. it's also not a bad idea to clear the browser history when you are done.
Thanks for the info! I'm not at USM but I just checked my office computer and found all those settings ON!!!

Really people if USM did have spyware do you think it would work? NO!! of course not nothing on this campus works so nobody is spying on you. Then again if you are that concerned about people seeing your emails then perhaps you shouldn't write that stuff down. Learn from the government people don't leave a paper trail. Use logic!!
