That's what the public is left with following the surprising conclusion Wednesday to the termination hearings for two University of Southern Mississippi professors.
Ever since March 5, when USM President Shelby Thames suspended and began termination proceedings against tenured professors Gary Stringer and Frank Glamser, USM faculty, staff, students and alumni had looked anxiously to April 28 - the day established by the state College Board for the administration to air its charges against the professors.
But after only two-and-a-half hours of testimony, Thames, the professors and the presiding judge - former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Reuben Anderson - began negotiations that resulted in a settlement.
When the hearing reconvened three hours later, Anderson informed the public that the dispute had been resolved and that both parties wanted to put this matter behind them.
The anti-climactic ending left several key questions unanswered.
USM hearings
Sideline to article:
"I'm astonished that USM President Shelby Thames sees no problem with rifling through the personal correspondence of professors. What bothers me the most is that Thames had to be monitoring Gary Stringer's and Frank Glamser's e-mail accounts for months to collect his so-called 'evidence.'
"After hearing this testimony, I'm confident the professors will be reinstated.
"I will never use campus e-mail again."
- Jill Childress, a doctoral student in history at USM.
"I thought a lot of what Dr. Thames had to say during his testimony was superficial in nature and didn't justify the terminations of professors Stringer and Glamser. I thought Dr. Glamser represented himself very well."
- Robert Peters, a graduate student in foreign languages at USM.

And Kenbot, who is posting as New Guy and Old Timer. *wink*
Who came up with "kenbot?" That is so appropriate!
Perhaps I should post this on a different thread, but, did anyone read what Roy Krumb -excuse me, Klumb, said in the article by Nikki Davis Maute? Is there really a good possibility that the IHL board will really wait until the 20th of May before meeting about this?

By all means, start a new thread. It deserves discussion. He is the chair of the board, so he is the one who calls meetings. Wait...he is the INCOMING CHAIR. Doesn't that mean that the PRESENT chair will call the next meeting?
Actually, the HA kinda came through for us today. About time. The news story is not bad either. Rich Campbell, you're forgiven for not printing any of my letters.
