USM ends termination proceedings against professors under agreement
The Associated Press
The state College Board has approved a deal in which two University of Southern Mississippi professors targeted for firing will stay on campus for two years in non-teaching roles.
The continuing dispute between the professors and President Shelby Thames had created problems on the USM campus, including no confidence votes by the Faculty Senate and limited protests by students.
The matter ended abruptly Wednesday when a special hearing officer stopped testimony on the termination proceedings and then announced a proposed settlement had been reached.
Under the agreement read by state Attorney General Jim Hood, the university is withdrawing termination proceedings and the professors will continue to be employed the 2005-2006 academic year in non-teaching roles."
Have all of you thought about this? If Shelby is forced out, the interim president or next president can review the agreement and ask Frank and Gary to come back. This could happen in a month or in a year.
I agree, FS. I've been wondering about that. I see this settlement as very very good for those who oppose Thames' actions and support G&S. To be fair, I'm not at USM, and in the short-term, there could be a lot of tension, but I don't see how Thames can maintain power under these circumstances.

I thought of that. It doesn't say they will retire in two years. It just says the university obligation to them will expire in two years. Another president might choose to keep them on...if that's what they want.

Shelby using UPD like his personal gestapo to inhibit students' rights to express themselves at the basketball game on March 9? Yes, I would say that he limited protests.

I would also consider the Thames supporter rally where there were like 5 people a "limited protest"
It does seem to leave the door open for their return. I see an instituted time of transition with a new administration. Unless the 2 years is the life of ST's contract -- please say no. Say he's out by graduation.
Maybe the CL means "limited" in the sense that the actual physical protests were spaced out, and not "continuous and contiguous" over the past two months?

Now is the time to organize another protest--this time against Shelby snooping through students' email.

Shelboo is halfway through a four-year contract as president. June 30, 2006, I believe.

And that is more than likely how much longer he will be president, unfortunately. Interesting that the profs' payout matches Shelby's remaining term of office, though.
Still too long. How can the IHL board honestly expect the administration and faculty to "beginning the healing process" after what we've all heard. I don't think the hearing changed 430 minds. G&S aside, the IHL board would be irresponsible to the citizens of Mississippi to continue to employ this man as a leader.
It would be absurd and irresponsible for IHL to pretend that Thames has a snowball's chance of working with any of the faculty successfully after this.
