"pileum" latin translation
Permalink Closed

Hi, I'm a student considering grad school in the fall at USM in spite of Thames' administration. I was listening to the WUSM recording of the hearing today, and tried to explain to my husband my understanding of Pileum's role in monitoring university emails, to which he chuckled and replied, "Pileum? Is that Latin for 'You're screwed'?" I looked up the Latin definition, and found:

pilleum, i n or pilleus, i n or pileum, i n -felt cap or hat (worn by Romans at festivals, esp. at Saturnalia, and given to a slave when freed as a symbol of his freedom); freedom.

How ironic that a company named for freedom operates in a manner that subverts and suppresses freedom! Just thought I'd share some odd trivia.

Faith,

Very ironic isn't it? Just so you know the faculty here are wonderful and I hope you will still plan to attend. I think it is marvelous that you are monitoring the situation before entering school. Good luck to you.

"Pileum" is also the name of a Roman short sword.  That definition (a weapon) makes a lot more sense, doesn't it?

And now we all know that Shelby Thames has a pileum!

Note the following from Pileum's website...

Webster’s Dictionary defines Pileum as “the top of the head of a bird”.  Our name reflects our goal of providing guidance to our clients with information and solutions that enable them to soar to the highest levels of performance … rather than becoming a sitting duck.
