I just submitted a case to F.I.R.E. (The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) on behalf of the faculty and students of USM.

After reviewing their website, I think that this organization can give our issues an even more public venue, hopefully drawing more national attention to it.  The current crisis seems to be tailor-made for them.

I listed the FireShelby website as a valuable source of information on all of the issues.  Hope you don't mind, FS!!!

As soon as I recieve a reply from them, I will inform all.

Just spoke with Mr. Robert Shibley of F.I.R.E. about the case.  He was aware of the Glamser/Stringer hearings but did not know the outcome.  He stated that he would look into the matter and get back in touch with us.

Good news. The FIRE has limited resources, but they work extremely hard on the cases they are able to take.

Response from F.I.R.E. concerning the case:

"Thank you for submitting your case for consideration by FIRE. Under normal circumstances, you can expect a response within two weeks. Those cases which present urgent circumstances will be given priority. Because of the large volume of requests FIRE receives, some cases may take longer to evaluate."

"Your case reference ID is
document.write(url["id"])
9406."

No Quarter!!!

Way to go!  I also wrote to them, urging them to give the case urgent consideration.  I hope other members of the board will do so as well.

No problem referring them to the website and message board.

That's what they're here for.

I might just write them myself.  Thanks for the info on this website.

F.I.R.E. Mission Statement
Permalink Closed

NOTE: The emphesized phrases below are due to me!

"The mission of F.I.R.E. is to defend and sustain individual rights at America's increasingly repressive and partisan colleges and universities.  These rights include Freedom of Speech, legal equality, due process, religious liberty, and sancity of consciousness - the essential qualities of individual liberty and dignity.  F.I.R.E.'s core mission is to protect the unprotected and to educate the public and communities of concerned Americans about the threats to these rights on our campuses and about the means to preserve them."

Since we opened our doors in October, 1999, FIRE has been involved in more than six hundred cases at more than 200 colleges and universities, private and public, large and small.

FIRE believes that Justice Louis Brandeis expressed a profound truth in his dictum that in a free society, "Sunlight is the best disinfectant." Very often, the mere exposure of violations of individual liberty, due process, legal equality, and the rights of privacy and conscience suffices to restore justice to individuals otherwise helpless before the winds of political correctness. Because colleges and universities rarely are willing to defend openly their abusive use of authority, public and media exposure is the Achilles' heel of political correctness. Often, in our experience, the very threat of taking cases to the court of public debate succeeds in leading a college or university to reverse an injustice. Recourse to the courts is a last resort.

When FIRE accepts a case from individuals who explicitly seek our assistance, we have their interests alone in mind. Because of that commitment, the majority of FIRE's interventions do not appear on our website. This restraint results both from requests for discretion and from the swift resolution of cases once we have pointed out to universities the embarrassment or actionable torts that might arise from their actions.
