The following is the text of an email that I received from someone in Baghdad, Iraq.  He is a friend of a USM student:

Subject:  Thames Resign! Restore USM's Trust and Honor!

I'm from the Iraq, so far away from Mississippi but have a friend at your university who told me that he had been fighting his own Saddam so I thought I’d write, as I am against all Saddams.

I read most of the links discussing the suspension of your two professors, I can't say I fully understand the charges against them but I do know this; professors are there for their students, it is the students who should decide whether or not a professor must stay or be dismissed from class not any dean. He may carry out any procedure against them if he has to but the classroom does not belong to him.

From a student in a country where I am just 'another brick in the wall 'politically oriented, dressed in a uniform all my life

Good luck in your struggle for freedom.

I'm sure the man in Baghdad will understand what I'm about to say.  This is an area of the world where freedom of thought is NOT encouraged.  People here do NOT question authority.  THis is very strange to the Western, educated mind.  It appears as though Shelby and his minions want the same thing.  That's just not going to happen in the US.  We have been taught that it is our civic responsibility to question.  We have been taught critical thinking skills.  They are second nature to us and we do it without purposefully doing it.  Maybe Shelby should be president at a university in this part of the world.
