My risk manager and I moved around campus all afternoon, conducting interviews with various faculty and students.  I met alot of you, and most of you were very gracious hosts to us.  I collected alot of resumes --- in fact we made 3 tenure-track hires today for my law school.  You'll probably hear about it over the next few days.

We grabbed a bite at Seymour's.  Bobby Chain met us over there, and work out a plan for the evening.  After a quick bite, I called my risk manager's associate and had him try to go over and speak with Mark Dvorak, and my risk manager, Bobby Chain and I headed over to Carl Nicholson's office.  We surprised him, and had a long chat with him.  Unfortunately, our presence there probably led to the IHL Board's failure to get a quorum for an emergency meeting.  For that I apologize, but we're doing good work.  As you know, Nicholson is departing the Board after tomorrow so there's not much that can be done with him at this point.  Bobby just wanted to get a few things off his chest, and he did a good job of it.  I wish you all could've been there.

My Risk Manager

Earlier I said that there were some things about my risk manager I wanted to convey.  I noted that Hanbury was given AG status this past Friday afternoon by Jim Hood.  My risk manager assumed the position at TCLS with AG status.  He also came on board with tenure.  That's right, my risk manager is tenured and he chairs the University Advisory Committee.  What's distinctive about my RM, though, is that we sought (early on) for him to attain what's called Federal Marshal status.  He was awarded it only a couple of months after taking the job.  Thus, he's "holstered up" as they say in the law enforcement world.  When Hanbury saw him (my RM), he looked like he'd seen a ghost or something.  It is a sight to see, I must say, to see a "holstered up" risk manager walking around a university.  I told you that we don't have any problems with students or faculty at TCLS.  Now you know why.

Back to the day

After the afternoon we had, my risk manager and I had dinner with Joe Paul at O'Charley's.  I told Joe something that I didn't want to have to tell him.  I told him that I made sure that he didn't get the position of VP of Student Affairs at Texas A&M.  He looked shocked and perplexed.  My risk manager then explained to Dr. Paul that he was going to be needed to fill a very important position at USM, and very soon.  After that, the evening went very well.

My risk manager and I wanted to turn in early, so we concluded dinner and headed back to Hawthorne Suites.  On our way out of O'Charley's, we saw my RM's associate coming in there to have a drink.  He was with C.E. Moore ----- at least that's how she introduced herself to the two of us.  He's really loving Hattiesburg I think.

We'll talk again tomorrow.

Dear Mr. Cooley,

Please tell your risk manager's assistant to watch his wallet around C.E. Apparently she has had a little trouble handling receipts accurately . . . If she does any design projects for you, make sure your RM and accountants handle the books. C.E. just gets a bit out of control, and I hear she has a hard time remembering just exactly what her name is. . . . .
