"Thames Yellow:" Someone tell me this is not true

I heard today that Shelby Thames has patented "Thames Yellow" which appears on all USM letterhead and other stationery, and is the color used on USM apparel and paraphenalia.

I understand that Thames receives royalties on all of these items. (I will refrain from making a bad joke about yellow being the appropriate color to assiociate with Thames' name.)

Ahhh...the university of the future!  It's all beginning to make sense, isn't it!

I hope this is somebody's idea of a joke.  Can you even patent a color? An art person would know more about this, but printed colors have to have pantone names and/or numbers, don't they?

It seems to me that "thames yellow" is a play on "yellow" -- please be wrong on this one, FS!

I don't know if it is true or not.  I am just reporting what I heard (from a USM staffer), and hoping someone in the know can tell us whether it's true or not true.

You can patent a paint, but you would have to copyright a color. Color is a lot harder to copyright.

Regaurdless, Thames may not be the brightest man in the world, but that kind of $$$ connection, even he would know better.

I don't know about a patent on a specific color, but if any of you watch NASCAR, look closely at the #43 car. It's been the same color since the 60's. Known as "Petty Blue"

I've heard the same rumor about the color.  There is something there, though, I can't remember the rule.  He ran into the problem with the paint store.  Does anyone possibly have more information on this than I do?

It's "PMS (some number) Gold." Several years ago (Pre-Shelby, I think) there was an official memo about how we should not use any other color. The female faculty in my department had a great laugh over it.
