On May 14th, we will attend graduation ceremonies at the University of Southern Mississippi for our beloved daughter, Rachel Quinlivan. We would like to thank all of her professors and counselors and numerous other fine people who have contributed to what we consider a fine education and a wonderful life's experience.
I would especially like to thank Dr. Davies because he recognized Rachel's journalism talents and pointed her in that direction. And oh, what a direction it has been.
Rachel has always been an exceptional child, the very light of my life. Excellence has been the norm for her. Rachel's abilities and her integrity are impeccable. I am so very proud to have her as my daughter.
Recently, however, that integrity was called into question by none other than the president of this fine university, Dr. Shelby Thames.
I do not know this man, Dr. Thames. I have only, until this year at least, heard such wonderful things about him. I am sure, to have become president of such a large and renowned university, he must be a man of tremendous talent and ability. What I find to be incomprehensible is that a man of his education and intellect could reach so low as to call our daughter's integrity into question.
And, let's face it folks, if he will question and throw dirt on our daughter's good name and reputation, then anyone in his world - be it student, faculty, friend or foe - is subject to his venom.
Rachel will be leaving USM on May 14 and will go on to bigger and better things as she starts her life's journey. All of the professors, faculty and students to come will have to deal in the future with Dr. Thames unless something is done to remove this man from office.
I, for one, find his hunger for power, his vindictiveness and his underhanded methods to be unbecoming a college president.
We are very proud of Rachel and wish her the best in her future.
Your letter will inspire many parents to think about USM in a new light. Would they want their children subjected to the same venom to which Rachel was subjected? Even Thames' supporters must recognize that his involvement of Rachel in his vendetta was selfish and destructive.
