The word from here on the Gulf Coast is; we need to find a faculty that will really nominate a graduate student for that position. There is one faculty that is supportive of Shelby, but now... so far no grad student will accept the position

Many departments voted not to nominate people. The Council of Chairs recommended to the Dean that the members be directly elected (rather than appointed by the Deans from a pool) citing faculty distrust of the process. They also recommended a delay:
"The Council of Chairs recommends that the organization of the proposed University Council be delayed until better procedures for selecting members can be devised, procedures that involve the duly-elected bodies of faculty, staff, and students, either through nominations by those bodies, or by separate elections organized by those bodies.
One reason for revising the process for selecting members to the University Council is that the current process suggested excludes certain members of the University community, such as University Librarians.
By operating through the duly-elected bodies of faculty, staff, and students, the resulting dialogue can be assured of greater legitimacy and more broad-based support than a process that does not work through these channels."
The faculty of CBED (Business and Econmic Development) voted to support the COC recommendation.
If this thing isn't dead in the water, it is certainly swimming upside down . . . .

Thank you darlin' -- ah git that little talent straight from the wicked little demon the flies right up out of my glass of Knob Hill bourbon (neat) and onto my right shoulder where it just says sweet l'l nuthins' into mah ear and you know what they say about the movin' hand that writes . . . (well, or the fingers that peck, anyhow).
I'm real curious about some o' your inspirations . . . .
By the way, ah sited Noel Polk walkin' in mah own neighborhood . . . imagine that! A real celebrity traipsin down mah own sidewalk.
Personally, ah think the PR office needs to hire Noel and Neil to write PR for the University . . . . hell, we'd out rhetoric Hah-vahd right out of Cambridge!
Sorry for the diversion, Board. Ah just cannot hardly conceal my glee -- we are ever so near to the day of liberation and the Free University of Southern Mississippi.

Are we to assume that PP is not a child of the South? Honey, you can't talk and eat grits at the same time. Grits deserve attention and concentration. I guess we need to teach you about red-eye gravy.
Actually, to get back to the topic of this thread, I am amazed at the comment that no Coast grad student would agree to serve on the PUC. Is there a way for that to get wider attention? I think that is significant.

This needs to be brought to the attention of David Elliott at WLOX, particularly since Southern Mess will be the focus of his "Sunday Night" program tomorrow.

Dennis Weisenberg is going to be on with Myron -- he is from the Coast. I'm sure he already knows this but I'll email him just to be sure.

Tee hee -- - and you will.
The two best people for this: Myron and Denis are both so calm and rational and just . . . normal. At the very least they will give truth to the lie about the "radical" frothing at the mouth faculty . . . . At the very best they will be able to help the public understand that the faculty isn't the enemy here . . .
