Every year when graduation rolls around, I am reminded of how important it is to connect with these brand spanking new alumni. At one time there was a Student Alumni Association. Where are they in this crisis??? Where is Bob Pierce??? Is it me, or is the the Alumni Association taking the same neutral position they took when Horace Fleming was being tarred and feathered? Better safe than sorry? There is no safety in being neutral when the stakes are this high. As a life time member of the USM Alumni Association (no, not the Southern Miss Alumni Association), I am very disappointed in their conspicuous silence.
I'm glad that someone else is wondering about the Alumni Association. My husband and I joined when it was VERY hard for us to afford to do so. We did it to support our University - the place where we met, etc. (I know - any sweeter and we will all get fat). They did nothing for Horace. And now they are doing nothing for the students - past, present, or future. This bothers me. I wrote the Alumni Association when I first heard about Gary and Frank. I received a MOST unsatisfactory reply. It wasn't anti-Thames. It wasn't pro-Thames. It was a wishy-washy bunch of nothing. I would have felt better if a stance had been taken - even if it was with which I did not agree!!
Good question. Is alumni still open? Who is the current president? Do they go dormant after football season? Someone might better go over there Monday and see if the lights are still on.
The Alumni Association does seem to have lost some credibility in recent years. However, Pierce is in a difficult position. Perhaps to stay neutral is an accomplishment. Being a university employee, he is subject to the wrath of SFT too.
Thames doesn't value the Alumni Association anyway. I don't understand why so many alums are supportive of him. He doesn't want their advice or money evidently.
The Alumni Association needs to have a stronger voice though. It does at most great universities.
Bob Pierce shouldn't be the target here. The board members are the ones who should be called to act. Write to all of them, but especially to the Executive Committee members.
Some members of this board might be hesitant to get in the middle of this fiasco because they were brand new board members when Horace Fleming went down and the alumni association took so much heat. This is understandable but no excuse.
Please urge the alumni board to call for SFT's resignation.
By the way, one board member I know expressed shock upon learning that Robin Robinson is on the alumni board. This person has never seen Robin at an alumni board meeting. We can only hope she continues this trend on the IHL board. No voice is better than her voice, I'm afraid.
