You know, though, that first one, as well as the one in the CL, are quite telling. The negative letters are neither articulate or factual. They base their premise on the fact that Shelby is the disciplinarian, in a Great Satinish way, put there to make his "possessions" students being "prized", faculty and staff a little more "unprized" tow the line. In any type of family this will cause dissention eventually. He is heady with power, and that is indeed troubling. I don't know how many more maimed rabbits (his buddies from his days in school, the Kleinpeters of the world) he can pull out of the hat. They certainly don't lend to his act. Not only is he (and those pro-Thames letters) giving a tarnished reputation to USM, but they are giving it to the South in general. My New England in laws and friends have been more than dismayed by these stereotypical characters coming out of the woodwork in defense of the little despot. They applaud the efforts of those who are trying to bring this man, along with those he brought in with him, down. They note the distinct differences in the two groups. Enough said.
You are exactly right. I left Mississippi 8 years ago for Florida and, although I love my home state, I'm amazed by how outraged people get when something is questioned in Mississippi. As you can probably tell, I have a degree from Ole Miss but I also have one from USM. I am always bothered by the narrowmindedness of some of the uninformed of my home state.
My colleagues have read in the Chronicle and University Business about USM and they have called me asking me about what has been happening at my alma mater. In response to this I pointed many to this website and the astounding work that so many gifted, articulate, courageous, intelligent, and truly professional academics have contributed to the just cause.
You have given me hope that postsecondary education in Mississippi is not simply rote or training. It is critical, higher level thinking supported by faculty and staff who challenge students to become more for the betterment of the world's citizenry. What a great legacy -- you all inspire me tremendously and I am proud to say that I have my USM diploma on my "ego" wall! Especially because it has Aubrey Lucas' signature on it!
