New position posted in Economic Development on 5/6/04

Questions: 1) a Ph.D. is not required to teach Ph.D. candidates?  I bet the College of Business Adm acreditation group AACSB will find this interesting; 2)  Will a non-Ph.D. teaching Ph.D. students and directing research be granted graduate faculty status?; 3) Why is the College of Business and Econ Dev teaching science Ph.D.'s in doctoral level courses?  Isn't that in another college?; 4) No national search?  Has not been posted in Chronicle of Higher Ed as of yet.  Economic Development has been redefined.

See job posting below pasted from the USM employment web page.

I'm thinking that this refers to the option of having a Ph.D in another field and not to not having a Ph.D at all . . . .'

If the administration is doing such a good job of bringing in business and top scholars, then tell me why they are not mentioned in Entrepreneur magazine as a top entrepremeurial college?  Could their methodology for seeking instructors affect their ranking?

Bellhaven, Jackson State, Ole Miss, and Miss. State make the list of top entrepreneurial colleges, but I don't see Southern Miss.  From Entrepreneur magazine: (http://www.entrepreneur.com/topcolleges/).

A Professor of Practice?

While other institutions (e.g., Maryland, Syracuse, Duke, Harvard) have such a faculty status, the only mention of a 'professor of practice' on the USM website is the ED position announcement.

Shouldn't faculty be involved with the decision to create a new faculty classification at the university? Were they?

They were at Syracuse. http://www.dailyorange.com/news/2002/02/27/News/University.Considers.Adding.NonTenure.Professor.Of.Practice.Rank-192525.shtml

Is this the position that can only be filled by a TH crony?

Here was my post about this very topic from a few days ago:

Here are some interesting tidbits I gleaned from looking at the USM HR job listings:

1.  There is a job posting for an Instructor of English (not a tenure-track position, most likely).  Here's the job description:

"The Department of English at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks an experienced secondary (grades 7-12) teacher with current Mississippi teaching licensure in English to begin full time fall semester 2004 teaching required courses in our English Education program and supervising student teachers in the field."

And here are the job requirements:

"Master's degree in English or an M.Ed., supervising experience with student teachers, and expertise with state assessment instruments.  Send letter of application and resume to David Wheeler, English Education Search Committee, Department of English, the University of Southern Mississippi, 118 College Drive #5037, Hattiesburg, MS  39406-0001.  Applications must be received no later than May 24, 2004, for full consideration; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience."

My thoughts:  This is the position that's supposed to take on Susan Malone's responsibilities?  If so, then the English Dept. is getting a raw deal...an Instructor for an Assistant Professor just isn't right.  This is the English Dept.'s loss.

2.  In contrast, here's a job listing in Ken Malone's dept. for a "Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurialism and Science":

"The Department of Economic Development at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the position of Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurialism and Science.  The position will be supported primarily by long-term federal grants with supplements from industrial partners and the professor will participate actively in the execution of those programs with the grant recipients.  The successful applicant is expected to develop a vigorous research program related towards entrepreneurial training and facilitation of science students.  Teaching and developing graduate courses in entrepreneurialism for physical science Ph.D. candidates is also required.

And the job qualifications for this job:

"A Ph.D. in the physical sciences is preferred.  Extensive business experience as evidenced by executive management of fortune 500 corporations, leadership of national business/technology organizations and creation of startup companies is required.  Qualified individuals should submit a curriculum vita with a statement of research and teaching plans, graduate transcript and three references to Dr. Kenneth Malone, Department of Economic Development, the University of southern Mississippi, 118 College Drive #5022, Hattiesburg, MS  39406-0001.  To receive full consideration, applications must be received by May 20, 2004; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled."

My thoughts:  A PhD is preferred, but business experience is REQUIRED??  This speaks for itself.  Note that, in many universities,a Professor of Practice is also NOT a tenure-track position. To wit (from the Vanderbilt Faculty Manual):

"The title Professor of the Practice of_______ designates full-time teaching positions that do not involve tenure. Ordinarily these positions are reserved for persons whose responsibility consists of instruction in professional practice activities and do not involve participation in faculty governance of the school. Professors of the Practice of_______ may be appointed for terms of not more than three years."

To my knowledge, this is the first use of Professor of Practice that I've ever seen at USM.  Expect more of these.

Betcha the Econ Development "Professor" will make a heck of a lot more than the "Instructor" of English, even though they are both non-tenured positions.

Sounds like Economic Development is in the wrong college!  Could this have been another ill-conceived move to put ED in The College of Business?

The 'professor of practice' designation is bothersome, especially if it is being set up without any faculty input.

What's the TH crony comment about (I'm afraid to ask)?

Just guessing here,

1) The "crony" part might refer to the fact that this faculty position is written so specific, it almost has to apply to someone already selected for the job, and

2) The position is only posted for 14 days. Note the faculty position was posted on May 6 and closes on May 20 - so it will be advertised just 14 days - perfect for an inside "crony" job if you want to limit applications and don't want someone competing with the person that has been pre-selected.

Economic development has certainly been re-defined.

"Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurialism and Science"?

Is that even a word?  Entrepreneurship, perhaps?

Malone is an Associate Professor. She is also a stronghold in the NCATE process.  I think the English Dept. is probably outraged, but at this point maybe they're willing to settle on a Instructor until a more competent person who is dispensing the money is at the helm.

A brief clarification re: the English Department's effort to fill Susan Malone's (unfillable) shoes--it was a department decision (albeit a debated one) to move forward with an instructor right now, for now.  That is, we weren't FORCED to hire at the instructor level.   It's too hard to detail why we went in this direction--but two primary factors: (1) we've lost almost all of the faculty who had been teaching the courses specific to the English education curriculum; we need people in the classroom; and (2) we could not, by all accounts, have filled a tenure-track position in English Education at this late date, under current institutional conditions.

I trust that's an accurate statement.  If any English fac want to help me here, please chime in.

Thanks for the clarification, Ellen.  Still a raw deal for you guys, even in the interim.
