You mean members have already been appointed and approved?  When did THIS happen?  USM sure works in mysterious ways . . . .

Have the media been made aware that some departments have refused to participate?  There was a post yesterday to the effect that no Coast grad student would participate.

President Shelby Thames agreed to creation of the council last week after it was suggested by USM’s deans to improve communication among faculty, staff and students at the university.

He agreed to the council? ROTFLMAO! He created it expressly because he couldn't agree to dealing with the FacSen.

Also interesting to note that the College of Health is to be represented by a graduate student & not a faculty member. That ought to tell you something, good, bad or indifferent...

PUC (pronounced "puke") goes forth!

I just learned the Pood has named two individuals to the PUC today.

Has anybody heard about other colleges?

Who are to be the lucky reps from CoAL?

Reps from CoAL, so I hear, include

Tom Fraschillo (faculty)

Petra Lamb (staff)

don't know about the student rep yet.

CBED did better.

Do you not have a couple of grad students that you're trying to run off anyway?

Or maybe somebody who needs to "pump" their resume'?

Several CoAL departments refused to participate. Even in the School of Music (home of Fraschillo) there was a petition not to collaborate.

CBED did send someone to the council, BTW.

I can't believe Fraschillo would do this. He may have been "selected" against his will. I will ocnverse with him about this.

As a prof. in the former college of the arts, I doubt he'd be an overt fan of ST.

Please do Miles. Ask him to share with you the email I sent to Elliott Pood and copied to Tom and to Petra Lamp, the other rep. Once I feel comfortable that Elliott has had a chance e to respond to me, I will post it here -- or at least those parts I feel can be public.

By the way, the Department of Theatre and Dance decided not to participate either . . . .

If I'm being repetitive, just ignore me (it won't hurt my feelings) but why has the Council been created and how is it different from the other councils that are already in place?  What's the mission of this council?

I can personally vouche that Petra Lamb is NOT a Shelboo clone, she was probably "selected" like Tom Fraschillo.

To put the major constituencies of the university (faculty, staff and students) together with Shelby to advise them on how we can "heal."

You can stop laughing now.

I'm immediately wiping the grin off of my face.  I guess we just need to remember that

Time wounds all heels.

Tenured faculty can make choices that staff and untenured faculty cannot.

Just for the record, Fraschillo was quoted in the HA in strong support of the reorganization of the colleges. He told students who wanted to be excused from his classes on March 9 that the protests were "none of their concern." (I'm not advocating letting students out of class, just reporting here.) Also, he was the first winner of the "Innovation" award last year for a translation of an unknown treatise that has received exactly one review in an obscure journal, beating out at least one scholar who was very deserving. I've heard some rumors that Thames has something on him, but Fraschillo seems to be bucking to be director of music (wanted to be interim Dean of the College of the Arts when Mary Ann Stringer got the job and threatened to sue when she got it). If he's not a Shelboo stormtrooper, he's not exactly on the front lines of the protests.

So it is not surprising that he got the job.

Fraschillo was certainly a reliably pro-Shelby voice in the past. He was quoted at least once in the Hat. Am. and has spoken out in other public forums. I've not heard much from him recently-- but I've never heard him contradict these earlier statements, either.

Not wanting to question at all why folks would join the counsel -- I think people can have good intentions here, including the Deans.

But I also think the counsel is a cynical move by the administration and I am very sorry to see anyone so used . . .  as I have said elsewhere, if the administration wants "healing" there are lots of places where it can start and there is no mystery. All the counsel does is create the appearance of good will (getting Shelby through until summer) and take the pressure of genuine action. I know someof the peopl eon the new council and they are good. Trellis is one. There are probably some others. But a lot of people went out of the running when their departments refused t participate in a charade.

It's a bogus charade.

Fly,

It's not by departments, but by college. A college gets ONE (count 'em, one) faculty, one staff, one student.

Let's through the tea in the harbor.

A further caution about trying to guess motives or attribute to individual faculty members a motivation we simply cannot know . . . We need NOT to alienate ourselves form each other nor to burn fences with potential later allies . . .

My sense is that we could have the entire faculty senate on this counsel and it would make little difference as this counsel's job is only to provide "advice." In fact, my guess is that what will happen is the administration will use it to exploit differences among the three constituent groups and play them against each other.
