2 letters from the May 11 Hattiesburg American opinion section, for your enjoyment...
---------------------------------- Faculty should 'get back to work' ----------------------------------
I am a very proud two-time graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and a supporter of our great institution.
Dr. Shelby F. Thames is a fine man and an inspirational leader. I am incredibly proud that he is our university's president and commend him for standing strong.
Quite frankly, the USM faculty needs to back off! Take a deep breath and get back to work.
Dr. Thames, thank you for your leadership!
Scott W. Openshaw, USM '92 and '96, Tallahassee, Fla.
---------------------------------- Faculty seeking own interests ----------------------------------
Professors are not administrators, so they should not try to administrate. They should teach. In light of the back-door hearing just held in Long Beach, the USM faculty wants the public and the students to think the greatest crime at the university is President Thames.
Actually, the greatest injustice is a faculty that puts their own interests above those of their students.
With every unanimous vote coming from the Faculty Senate, I have to believe that every USM instructor has forgotten what it means to be an instructor.
The faculty clearly no longer cares about educating students ... which is supposed to be the true function of an instructor. I have left USM in Hattiesburg for William Carey College in Gulfport.
The instructors here do what they are expected to do.
Exactly what I've been hearing many people say about the current President!!!

One thing is for sure. Faculty who have left because of the administration will not be teaching our students. Beyond that, there is no evidence that the faculty is not teaching.
