Little accomplished at USM council's 1st meeting Some doubt usefulness of new committee

After more than an hour and a half meeting that included videos and a communication exercise, the President's University Council only agreed to meet again next week to further improve communication on campus between staff, students and faculty and USM President Shelby Thames.
While some attendees came away from the meeting believing that the council could foster improved relations on campus, others remained skeptical about what good could come of the council.
"This group does not take the place of the Faculty Senate," said Thames before the meeting. "It does not take the place of the Staff Council. It does not take the place of the Student Government Association. It is not a governor's body. It is a mechanism for additional viewpoints. ... It's an opportunity for me to receive input from a different group of Southern Miss stakeholders."

"My opinion is there's only one person in that room who needed that workshop," said anthropology associate professor Amy Young, who attended only to watch.
Peter Butko, 49, an associate professor of chemistry, only stayed for about 10 minutes before leaving.
"It was just ridiculous," Butko said. "It had a very kindergarten spirit, at least the first 10 minutes I attended. I decided as a faculty member I have lots of things to do and my time is more precious than that."

As I have said before, you all are very fortunate to have an opponent as ham-fisted and amateurish as SFT. I'm sure this is not the kind of article he wanted members of the community to read about his new creation. Almost everyone on the planet has been to these kinds of pointless "training sessions" with videos and workshop exercises, and everyone knows what a total waste of time they are. By choosing to begin this way, SFT has given himself another self-inflicted black eye (I think he has run out of toes to shoot off, so I chose not to use that well-tested metaphor).
