Here's a letter from the owner of Javawerks. Is there any possibility that the decision mentioned here is retailiation against Javawerks for allowing anti-SFT students to meet there?
"USM did not negotiate with Starbucks; we negotiated with Aramack (or somesuch). Unfortunately, Aramack is contracturally linked to Starbucks. We sincerely regret any inconvenience, blah, blah, blah. Just keep sending us your money and support and remember SMTTT."
I hate to think that not allowing Javawerks on campus is retribution. They have been very nice to let us use their yard for making signs, we've had every CSUSM meeting there, even crafted the ACLU group in the back. I urge everyone to continue supporting Javawerks, even if the Starbucks comes to campus. I for one refuse to support a company that was chosen over local business. There is a petition to sign at Javawerks if anyone is interested.
It's even worse when you consider the absence of competition! Even if Starbucks ended up with the contract, allowing local businesses, and others to compete for the contract might have resulted in a better contract for USM.
However, on an emotional level, it is annoying that local business wasn't even given a chance at the contract!

Aramark has been at Clemson for 10-plus years. I believe Aramark made a deal to sell Starbuck's coffee in some of the on-campus eating places they operate. But Clemson has two different (non-Starbucks) coffee shops on campus.
I had to close a business in Purvis because people drove past me on their way to WalMart. I'll be buying my coffee at JW. Locally-owned business is the lifeblood of any community. Starbucks won't know the difference.
I do not like the idea of any of the companies they are bringing in, especially starbucks. This means increased prices for meal plans for students by $200 to $300, which I can not (not barely...can NOT) afford right now. I will take my business elsewhere and suggest my family and friends do the same. Come fall, I'll buy my books at campus book mart instead of at barnes and noble, even though it will be an inconvience to me and I can not 'charge it' and go to class.
If it comes down to it, I won't spend any more money on campus outside of my tuition.
Have you seen the ideas for the other resturants they are bringing to campus? Totally un-neccessary and unwanted.
