PUC agenda items

I would like the PUC members, especially my representative, Tom Fraschillo, to ask Shelby Thames very pointed questions about his administration over the past two years.

1. Why did you fire Glamser & Stringer for having used Dvorak's social security number and not Lisa Mader, who gave it to the press?

2. Show us on the books the $1.8 million that you claimed the re-organization would save. Where has that money gone?

3. Why did you lie so often, even under oath during the hearing, by claiming that if the faculty had just ASKED you and Dvorak for her credentials, you would have made them public? You know as well as everybody else that the faculty asked for those credentials dozens of times and that you both stonewalled every time. Dvorak even threatened to sue.

3a. Will you now, this minute, give us those disputed credentials?

4. Why have you abandoned the Capital Campaign?

5. Why did you fire Anthony Harris at all, much less in the middle of a semester when he was teaching two classes that you would not let him complete?

6. Why do you think that getting in people's faces and screaming at them, especially when surrounded by your cabinet of cronies, is a good way to conduct business with professionals? I think it's a craven and cowardly way to do anything, and the PUC demands a public apology to Myron Henry and any others you have subjected to this treatment.

7. Why are you so uncomfortable with disagreement? Is it because you are so unsure of yourself that you must build a facade of yea-sayers around you to protect you from ever being wrong? Is that why you have been such a bully, apparently all your life?---certainly, if even half the rumor is true, all your career here at usm? Are you really so empty inside that you can't tolerate disagreement?

8. Since you have stated that the PUC does not replace the faculty senate or other governing bodies, will you immediately begin patching things up with the other representative bodies, talk to them, and to others of us, regularly? You have claimed that your door is always open to faculty, but there's been some doubt about that, and few have wanted to risk #7 above.

9. Why do you think you are above United States law? Will you please explain to USM why you and Jack Hanbury directed the deans not to comply with faculty's request information under the Freedom of Information Act, and then tried to intimidate the couple of deans that actually complied with the law (you saw where that got Hanbury, I assume)? Would you explain why you should not also be fired for this patently illegal activity? Nobody believes that Hanbury did that on his own.

10. Why did you and Gianinni try to do an end-run around the Hattiesburg City Council by changing the terms of the legislation you had asked the HCC to sponsor for a bond vote in Hattiesburg for $10 million to upgrade athletic facilities? According to the Hbg American, you tried to get Rep. Fillingane to push the measure through for an additional $12 million without a vote by Hattiesburg voters. Do you think this is any way for gown to conduct business with town?

11. The faculty has asked you repeatedly to produce the information we the faculty have asked for about the stealth raises, and I want you to look us all straight in the eye and tell us that you did the right thing by giving your daughter such a huge raise. Will you now do so?

12. Tell us, please, what's going on with the Trent Lott Center. Why is that not going smoothly?

13. Tell us, please, what's happening to the Nursing Program.

14. Tell us, please, what's happening to the Foreign Language program.

15. Tell us, please, why you gave ca. $200,000 to the SGA to sponsor a concert and to promote a student publication alternative to the Student Printz---money that might have gone to buy books, for example. Where, by the way, did that money come from?

16. Dont you see now that NOBODY trusts you and that you have lost forever ANY chance that you could lead this university, even if your style was "leadership" rather than driving us like cattle or mules where you want us to go? Why dont you just resign and let us all get back to our first love, the classroom? Aren't you tired of all this disagreement? Do you think it's going to stop until you step down?

17. Tell us, please, how, given the mess you have made of USM, the lives and careers your have disrupted, the programs you have mangled by mismanagement, the general havoc you have caused for no good reason, you can look at your self in the mirror.

Tom, since you are my representative on the PUC, I ask you to ask Thames to deal with these issues. Only then can we even think about healing. If the PUC will insist on responses to these issues, I'll begin to think of it as a serious forum for communication.

Go, Noel!  As you know, the reality is that NONE of this will be brought up by Tom Fraschillo because it is all "rehashing old issues," which he already stated that he will not do.  This is why the PUC has to GO!  Make SFT talk to elected representatives....

NO QUARTER, folks...get it???

I am sure these items will be placed on the agenda immediately and discussed forthwith.

I am also sure that a vast lake has just formed in the middle of the Mojave desert.

Noel,  Some of us wish you would just come out and be upfront about your feelings on this issue and not beat around the bush.  Thank you.

All of your issues are right on target.  I did not know that Myron got an an a## chewing in front of the cabinet.  I know of others and have observed others being berated.  Tastless and tacky, cheap intimidation which no one deserves.  If a manager treated someone in housekeeping this way he would be out of USM like a rocket and should be!!!

You asked about the Nursing program and the damage that has been done.  The only thing saving the College of Business and Economic Development from a worst gutting at the moment is Harold Doty.  CBED is the gold mine that Thames and company wish to mine using strip mining techniques reminiscent of the worst of West Virginia coal mining history.  No one in central administration believes in CBED accreditation.  Standards will get in the way of mining.  When the University leadership repeatedly say,s "Maybe we can not afford accreditation for CBED,"  where does world class university fit into the picture.

Rumor is that Ken Malone, Gregg and Hudson are launching an executive MBA program as well as an executive Masters of Economic Development.  These will be offered off campus and use faculty from other Universities who are picking up some extra money.  Translation "we gonna get some cheap labor."   Do the faculty in CBED know anything about this?  I can't believe Dean Doty would agree to drop all standards.  What is happening in CBED?  Has the program been approved by the faculty in CBED, and the graduate Council?

So Noel, add this to this list of things for PUK to ask Shelby.
