Shelby and his supporters keep claiming that he has saved the university $1M-3M. Of course, that is all easy enough to say. Although he did eliminate 4 colleges, he added an extra Provost and a high priced "Risk Manager". Furthermore, the Dean of the College of Marine Science was paid though the GCRL budget-a line item outside of the university budget. I don't know if any of the staff were eliminated (something I don't advocate) along with the colleges, but I haven't heard that such a thing occurred. There should be an audit by an independent outside agency in order to ascertain exactly how much money Dr. Thames has indeed saved the university.

Does Mississippi have a state comptrollers office, or something comparable? I ask because there is such an office in Texas, with a big staff of auditors who's mission it is to root out fiscal corruption in state agencies, including the university system. The Comptroller herself is a shameless self promoter, and it takes almost nothing to trigger an audit, if she thinks it'll result in favorable headlines--for her. Just a thought...
BTW, the USM internal auditing staff were largely hired from the state auditor's office when Bryant came in. There are some good people in that office at USM, but I think they've been hammered down quite a bit.
