As Fire Shelby closes let's all remember the people who have been hurt by SFT--and also remember that everyone of them has survived. HE HAS NOT MANAGED TO DESTROY ANYONE.
The deans (Carl Martray, Jane Boudreaux, etc.) , the staff that were moved around or left for other jobs because of the situation (Cheryl Mowdy, Candy Santell, etc.), the faculty (Gary Stringer, Frank Glamser, and all who have retired or left for other jobs), and the faculty who fight on (Myron Henry, Anne Wallace, all the faculty senate, all the academic council. all the graduate council).
I'd like to remember Jim Hollandsworth and his many years of service to USM. The way in which he was summarily dismissed by SFT was an atrocity.
Jim loved USM from the top to the bottom--from the upper reaches of administrative work to teaching first-year students. Not many may know this, but Jim taught a few sections of Freshman Honors English Composition (ENG H101) for the Honors College back when I was there (sometime in the late 90s). He stepped in to help us out, and he did it because he said that he enjoyed the students and what they had to say (and write about). Jim is a fine teacher, a world-class scholar, and a true intellectual. Instead of "lording" his intelligence or position above others (as SFT does), he approaches every situation as a new learning experience. This is the mark of a TRUE teacher!
I just wanted to publicly thank him for his service to USM, and let him and others know that we will not forget! So, SFT, you lost a great man when you let Jim Hollandsworth go. Shame on you, for this and every single one of your bad decisions. USM deserves so much better.
