Does anyone know how to easily archive this site?
Permalink Closed

Does any computer whiz out there know how to download and save (and thus archive) the whole site in one fell swoop?  It takes about half an hour to save one page of the message board, message-by-message; there are now 37 pages of messages.  If anyone knows how to preserve all this stuff more easily for posterity, please let us know.  This site is, I suspect, a unique thing in the annals of higher education; it really should be preserved.

Rumor has it that a diligent group of librarians have been archiving this the FS site all along. Someone may want to check with Special Collections to see what software they were using and/or if the message board was archived.

Thanks for everything you've done, FS!!!
(this is your standing ovation)

Yes. Mary Beth Applin is the contact for this.

Just giving credit where credit is due -- Peggy Price & Diane Ross in Archives & Steven Turner in Information Services spearheaded this project. They've been archiving all the blogs they can find on the topic, the FS site, and all other electronic media associated with this topic. These are the folk people should be contacting.

If someone can indisputably confirm that this kind of archiving has been (and is being) done, then I will cease my own primitive efforts.

Helpful,

I assume you're joking, but, if not, then I'd just like to say that archiving this kind of material is precisely what university librarians and archivists SHOULD be doing.  The last few months have probably been among the most important in the entire history of USM, and it's important that as full a record as possible be kept of all the important developments that have been taking place.

Steven's too wrapped up in the news right at the moment to respond personally, but he hollered the following from across the living room:

"Yes, the site has been archived on a continual basis, and I'm pretty sure the message board as well. I'll check on the status tomorrow and either way we'll make sure the message board gets done before Friday."

Thanks very much!  Is there any chance that the most substantive, most thoughtful pieces on this board (e.g., the letters by Jim Hollandsworth, Douglas Chambers, and others, plus the article about Bobby Chain's criticism of SFT, plus anything else of enduring interest) can be post on another website so that the new AAUP site can link to it?

Having this stuff archived in a library is great; having it easily accessible on the web would be even better.  Is that a possibility?

To answer my own questions, I have just discovered that it is incredibly easy to copy-and-paste stuff from this board to the new board.  I have been using this discovery to transfer some of the best (i.e, most substantive, least ephemeral) material from this board to the AAUP board.  Others may wish to do the same.

Just posted this on the sticky-noted thread, but yes the whole site and the message board are being archived for posterity, along with as much other web stuff (dealing with either side of the issues), and as much "in print" stuff as we can gather.  If you have anything to donate (or want to make sure I haven't missed a website, let me know.

And yes, this is actually part of my job.

No, just a public service announcement for the other regular posters on this board.  "If it walks like a troll and talks like a troll...."
