What would Bob Dylan say?

Invictus,

Do you have any words from Bob Dylan to close out the FS message board?  There have been requests, and I'm not up to the task (I provided words from T.S. Eliot on another thread!).

Does anyone else have final words from Great Thinkers to add to the thread?

Yes, truth4usm, I have a word to add from the greatest thinker of them all: Pogo. Pogo said, in his infinite wisdom, "NO QUARTER!"

Here are a few gems from the Victoria's Secret poster boy:

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'.
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And know that it's for real,
The hour when the ship comes in.

Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drownded in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

("When the Ship Comes In", 1963. The Clancy Brothers version is definitive.)

Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time
To disgrace, distract, and bother me.
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face,
And the dust of rumors covers me.
But if the arrow is straight
And the point is slick,
It can pierce through dust no matter how thick.
So I'll make my stand
And remain as I am
And bid farewell and not give a damn.

("Restless Farewell", 1964. Frank Sinatra's favorite Dylan song.)

I hurt easy, I just don't show it
You can hurt someone and not even know it
The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity
Gonna get low down, gonna fly high
All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie
I'm in love with a woman who don't even appeal to me

Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake
I'm not that eager to make a mistake

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

("Things Have Changed", 1999. Won Oscar for Michael Douglas' "The Wonder Boys".)

Did Pogo really say that?  I thought his most famous quote was, "We have met the enemy, and it is us." (sounds like a quote that Machiavelli would find appropriate for all the player-haters on the FS board!).

And of course, the following is so important that I'll quote it in its entirety.

Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin' up, we struggle and we scrape
We're all boxed in, nowhere to escape

City's just a jungle, more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away
I was raised in the country, I been workin' in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

Got nothing for you, I had nothing before
Don't even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pourin' down
Nothing you can sell me, I'll see you around

All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well, the devil's in the alley, mule's in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinkin' about the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed

Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
I need somethin' strong to distract my mind
I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind

Well I got here following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me

Everybody movin' if they ain't already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin' to be kind
So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

("Mississippi", 1997.)

This is the song that WUSM played on the day of the fateful hearing (April 28).  A wonderful song, for sure.

Thanks, Invictus!

And as you join the good ship earth
And you mingle with the dust,
You'd better leave your underpants
with someone you can trust.

Thanks all. That was my earlier request for a little Dylan commentary. Here's my contribution.

To Angie, he'd say:

Oh, Angelina. Oh, Angelina....

When you cease to exist, then who will you blame?

I've tried my best to love you, but I cannot play this game.

Your best friend and my worst enemy is one and the same, Angelina.

And to Shelby:

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
Then you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

That's what I think he'd say.

Invictus,

Duhhh, You lost me. My e-mail is routed to you, via Truth, right? So maybe it hasn't been shunted to you just yet, hence, isn't in your in-box? I don't know the procedure, but if my missive doesn't surface, let me know, here. I only hope it wasn't intercepted by operatives from Pileum, as it contains highly sensitive encrypted information concerning Mr. Dylan.

Or worse, the RIAA

<OBLIGATORY ACADEMIC DISCLAIMER>
We are talking about FAIR USE, folks. Scholarly research purposes only.
</OBLIGATORY ACADEMIC DISCLAIMER>

And here's a nice little Dylan album cover for you. Read the title at the bottom

Dylan & Baez in Reed Green Coliseum, actually. (In this case, on the world-famous Top Cat label.)

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. <SIGH>

Invictus,

Incredible! Is that thing for real; were they really there? What year? A bootleg recording no doubt? I must have it. Have you heard the recently released live 1964 concert from the NYC Philharmonic ? Joanie accompanies him on several tunes, I think on disc 2. This was in the days when his voice was pure, his humor intact and finely honed. A real masterpiece.

Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Kinky Friedman (my hero!) & the 1976 edition of the Rolling Thunder Revue blew into Hattiesburg on 1 May 1976. The Top Cat release, "Highway 49 Revisited," is a partial show, but the sound quality is fairly decent considering the technology that audience tapers had back then.

Re: Live 64, here's a RealAudio clip (from an old bootleg) of Bob Dylan, stand-up comedian.
